Welcome to Episode 2 of Chapter 3: Understanding Emotions.
In this introduction episode, I present my next deep dive: the Understanding Emotion series!
Inspired by a workshop on emotions I attended years ago, I talk about how the next few episodes will unfold. We will digest information on emotions and reflect on how it relates to our own personal experience. We learn to use our emotions to help make sense of our inner world and how we experience our life. The files can be found if you scroll down a bit below.
I recite a poem I’ve written, titled The Preciousness of Life, to playfully help us practice the art of listening and reflecting internally, to build a better understanding of how we feel inside.
Here are the words to the poem, so that you can follow along if you wish:
The preciousness of life.
My human innocence is my human essence, My bioluminescence in the dark. Can it be my own guiding light?
Is the preciousness of life My compass in the night? Have I been caring for it right?
What would happen if I prioritized my peace? What would it feel like to be at ease So that I feel safe enough to dream, To dream of a world where I build at a pace That doesn’t erase the very nature I belong to?
Would I be less sad Without this bombardment of ads Filling my head with fluff, Working my days away for more stuff? It’s all just stuff. When is enough, enough in my head? What if I worked my way to finding meaning instead?
What would life feel like Without the constant push of sexuality This porn-star personality, Tell me, I’ll do anything to please! Please, just tell me you love me.
Is this really all my fault? Can I get out of this cult My cult-ure tells me what to want, think and feel. What’s the right way to heal? I don’t know where to start.
Help me understand. It feels completely out of my hands. I’m suffocating. I can’t breathe.
Breathe. I let myself breathe.
There’s a somewhere out there, Where fighting each other for fame Is no longer something we claim for ourselves. Everybody needs attention. Being seen and heard is a type of affection That we can give to ourselves too.
I am safe enough to build my own solid foundations, A creator of my own life's creation. I give myself permission... to be free.
I won’t deny myself the right to live a peaceful life. We aren’t meant to be constantly poised to fight, Always in flight, frozen in our ways.
I am free in my state of flow, Going where I need to go. Yes, gut-instincts guarding, But intuition guiding, Asking me to listen.
Listen! Do I agree with that? Listen! Does that even feel right? Listen! Do I actually believe that? Listen! What do I want from life? Listen!
What gives my existence meaning?
What’s my heart saying?
Problem-solvers at the ready!
Let's try to keep this boat steady, Navigating waves so huge. It’s a deluge of anger out there.
Injustices so great. How do I tame the hate That’s inside my own heart?
The brave hearts of our time, Those with golden spines Fiercely protecting our own innocence. Cubs protected by their mama bear. Predators beware! We've got teeth too.
If conflict resolution isn’t your solution, Then I walk away from what isn’t compatible With the appreciation for the preciousness of my life.
With the preciousness of life.
